How to Find Good Product Ideas for Selling on Shopify
Ok, so you clicked here looking for product ideas. Not how to find product ideas.
But here’s the thing - if you learn the skill of product research yourself, you’ll never need another list like the one below! Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life and all that!
So before we get to the best products to sell on Shopify this year, here’s some quick and fast ways to find product ideas of your own:
- Look at what you already have. Cliché, I know, but maybe you've had a brilliant idea brewing in the back of your mind or have encountered a problem that could use a product solution. Think about where you face friction in your daily life. Start writing down ideas in a notepad!
- Amazon's bestseller lists. You can find products with proven demand that are perfect for building a brand around. Currently, insulated water flasks are trending in positions one to three. Who knew hydration could be so profitable?
- Peruse Kickstarter - Kickstarter is a platform where entrepreneurs seek funding to launch their products. Check out the discover page to find up-and-coming product ideas. Keeping with the theme of drinking vesicles, here’s a cool water bottle project which could be one of the best products to sell on Shopify.
- Go trend hunting on Google Trends. Google trends are a great tool to discover what people are searching for and identify niches and products that are surging in popularity. As you’ll see later, I’ve used Google trends to validate rising demand for all of the products in this list. Ahrefs or Moz can also be useful for gauging search demand.
- Find a supplier - Once you've found a product idea, it's time to bring it to life. Head over to Alibaba (or try Aliexpress if you're dropshipping) and search for your product idea. Remember that best selling water bottle on Amazon? Here's a very similar version from a supplier on Alibaba for 1/10 of the price per unit. Time to make those hydration brand dreams a reality!
Where to Source the Best Products to Sell on Shopify
Ok, so once you have your own idea for a product to sell on Shopify, it’s time to find a supplier.
Suppliers come in all shapes and sizes. Finding the best one depends on what you’re selling and where you’re selling it. But here’s some good places to start:
- Alibaba: Alibaba is a popular sourcing platform that allows you to connect with suppliers from all over the world. You can search for products, compare prices, and negotiate directly with suppliers. It's a great place to start if you're looking for products to sell on Shopify.
- AliExpress: If you're dropshipping, AliExpress is a great option. It's a subsidiary of Alibaba and has a similar interface, but it's geared towards small businesses and individual buyers. You can find products with low MOQs (minimum order quantities) and test out your ideas before committing to a large order.
- Trade shows: Attending local trade shows is a great way to meet suppliers in person and see products up close. You can often negotiate better deals in person and get a better sense of the quality of the products you're considering.
- Social media: Believe it or not, social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook can be great places to find suppliers. Search for hashtags related to your product niche and see what suppliers and manufacturers are posting. You can also reach out to influencers in your niche and ask for recommendations.
- Wholesale directories: Wholesale directories like Tundra, SaleHoo, Worldwide Brands can save you time and effort by providing you with a curated list of suppliers and products. They often have strict criteria for inclusion, so you can be confident that the suppliers you find are reputable and reliable.
Remember, when sourcing products, always vet your suppliers carefully. Look for reviews and ratings, ask for samples, and communicate your expectations clearly. With a little bit of legwork, you can find the best products to sell on Shopify and build a thriving business!
13 of the Best Products to Sell on Shopify in 2024 (With Examples)
Now that you know how to identify some of the best products to sell on Shopify and where to source them, it’s time to jump right into the high demand products that have serious potential over the next few months and years.
For each product on the list, we included the Google trends data, plus an example of a successful shopify store to serve as inspiration for your own business.
1. Journals & Diaries
Kicking off our list, we have journals and diaries. I know, this doesn’t seem like a cash cow, right? Well think again.
Take a look at one of the best Shopify stores in the business - Best Self.
Best Self sells a range of journals, calendars, prompt cards and more all aimed at helping you become a better version of yourself.
And they’ve hit the nail on the head - one quick look at the data and you can see that journaling has steadily been rising in popularity over the last few years.
For more inspiration checkout Shopify’s interview with Mind Journal. They’re another awesome shopify store selling journals aimed specifically at men.
In terms of a supplier for your journals - many of the print on demand companies such as Printify supply you with custom designed notebooks. This approach is low-risk as you don’t need a minimum order quantity to start!
So, growing demand + Low risk + Big potential upside? I don’t know about you, but that’s enough to put journals firmly on the list of the best products to sell on Shopify.
2. Health Supplements (Mushrooms!)
Next up we have health supplements. Online guru Tim Ferris got his initial start selling supplements online with his company BrainQuicken, and the good news is that the market is still booming today.
eCommerce brands like Elm & Rye, Athletic Greens and Heights are all making bank selling supplements online.
One particular sub-section of the health space to watch is mushrooms. Mushrooms have been steadily growing in popularity over the last five years.
This opens the door to a whole host of mushroom-based products to enter the market. Above I’ve identified a mushroom supplement - but you could also take the mushroom trend and apply it to other products.
For example, you could launch a one-product Shopify store that sells mushroom home-grow kits to budding botanists.
Then you could create some viral TikTok videos (“My girlfriend got me this grow kit..”) to drive traffic to your product pages. Or at the same you could provide some value posts in the r/mushroom subreddit with tips for how to grow your own mushies. The marketing for something this on-trend is easy because it basically sells itself!
🔥 Pro Tip: Identifying a trend like ‘mushrooms’ and then coming up with product ideas is much easier than trying to come up with a product idea out of the blue. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, just observing what the market wants, and then stepping in and provide the supply.
3. Niche Hobby Equipment
One way to find the best products to sell on Shopify is to zero in on hobbies. That’s because hobbyists are irrationally passionate about their pastime.
This means they’re prepared to spend money on products without much persuasion required! (plus hobbyists are super easy to accurately target with Meta ads.)
Selling hobby equipment is best if you’re incredibly passionate about the niche. For example, the Shopify store Fishpond is run by a group of guys who are all super into fishing.
This means they design products specifically for people like them. They can also market in a way that speaks to their audience.
Fishpond have amassed an audience of 100k Instagram followers - which is huge for a small business. And they can only do this because they are their audience. They know the ins and outs of fishing and how to create a great product.
Some hobbies, like fishing, can be seasonal. Others can be year-round. But what’s clear is the demand for established hobbies is going nowhere. With a large market, it only takes a little bit of ingenuity to capture a loyal segment of customers who’ll support your brand for years to come.
4. Pickleball Equipment
Moving from a hobby as old as time, to a brand new one, next on our list, we have pickleball equipment.
Pickleball has exploded in popularity over the last year or so. And all of that demand is just begging for more supply.
At the time of writing, most pickleball topics are relatively easy to rank for. So if you’re looking for an eCommerce business where your main marketing strategy would be SEO - pickleball store could make an excellent fit.
However, you’ll have to move fast on this one. With the current level of demand, it won’t be long before established racquet sports brands move into the space and scoop up large swathes of the market.
Just as I was researching this post, I saw that French sports equipment giant Decathlon (who are also on Shopify!) have launched a range of pickleball racquets to capitalize on this huge trend. So, don’t beat around the bush if you want to jump into this space!
5. Coffee Equipment
Making coffee is becoming increasingly popular around the world. In the US in particular, there's been a very strong increase in demand for coffee equipment over the last decade.
Everything from coffee machines, to grinders, to beans and coffee cups has seen growth in search volume and interest from consumers.
Ratio coffee has an amazing Shopify store that sells really cool machines and accessories for coffee enthusiasts.
Coffee is, in a sense, becoming not just something we drink to wake up in the morning - but a niche pursuit of its own. Even if it is largely to fill the void as us millennials continue through our collective extended quarter-life crisis.
6. Personalized Goods
Selling personalized goods is an awesome way to build a profitable print-on-demand business.
In this case, I’ve taken the coffee trend from above, and married it to the trending data below to create a simple, low-risk business idea that I think could be one of the best products to sell on Shopify for first-timers: Personalized espresso cups.
While uncommon goods sell personalized family mugs, there’s very few vendors (outside of a couple on Etsy) who supply personalized espresso cups. Just imagine you have a friend or relative who loves their espresso - a personalized cup would make an awesome gift right?
To execute this business - you’d build a shopify store, install a print on demand app that supplies espresso cups, and then pair up with a designer on Fiverr who can mock up templates.
When an order comes in, you send it to your designer, they do the customization (i.e. add someone's name) and then you upload the design to the POD company who’ll print it and ship it directly to the customer.
As you acquire more customers, you can take on a second and third designer to keep up with the demand - and eventually hire a VA to manage your team of designers, freeing up time for you to focus on your next big move.
7. Health & Beauty Products (e.g.Water Filters)
Nowadays, there’s a lot of money to be made where the health space and the beauty space intersect.
See, many consumers are growing increasingly health-conscious. The recent rise of supplementation, sleep optimization and activity trackers are all evidence of this trend. (Whether Dr. Andrew Huberman caused this, or is a result of it, is not yet known!)
So it makes sense that a list of the best products to sell on Shopify reflects this. Jolie is a Shopify store that sells in this space, and they’re absolutely killing it with their filtered shower head.
As more and more customers worry about the negative health effects of drinking and bathing in regular tap water, you can expect to see this area blow up over the coming years. Fear is a very powerful purchase motivator (think of insurance, alarms, firearms) - and fear of ill health effects is a powerful force to drive conversions on your Shopify store.
8. Men’s Accessories (Wallets etc)
The last few years have seen a rise in the popularity of men’s accessories. Men’s jewelry brands like CRFTD and wallet brands such as Ridge have grown from small side-hustles into multi-million dollar businesses.
What makes men’s accessories one of the best products to sell on Shopify is that they’re super easy to source - you can find exact replicas of Ridge wallets and similar rings and necklaces to CRFTD in many wholesalers catalogs. In addition, they’re evergreen in terms of popularity and also super-giftable.
Another idea in this space could be to create a men’s accessory store. You could curate a selection of awesome products for men - get in touch with companies like Ridge and CRFTD and buy their products at wholesale rates for reselling to your own customers.
You can use an app like Carro to start a collaborative store right off the bat. Carro lets you sell products in your store that are actually from other stores. Then your orders are shipped from your partner store/supplier directly to your customer.
9. Loungewear
The popularity of loungewear really took off during the pandemic when people were spending most of their time at home. However, the demand for comfy clothes is still as strong as ever.
Shopify store Misscosy generates a massive amount of revenue - about $30,000 per day based on what we can tell - from the sales of their cozy loungewear sets.
Plus, loungewear is one of the best products to sell on Shopify because it typically has a big mark-up relative to many other products. For example, here’s a supplier on Alibaba who’s selling them for less than $10/unit.
While we can’t say anything the quality of the garment is up to that of Misscosy’s items, even if you tripled the unit price and went for premium materials, you’d still be looking at more than 300% mark-up to the retail price.
10. Head Shavers
Before we compiled this post about the best products to sell on Shopify, we wouldn’t have predicted head shavers to be on the list.
However, when we dug into the data, it appears it’s actually an excellent high demand product that is currently booming in popularity.
As far as I could tell, Shopify-based business Skull Shaver began their foray into eCommerce as a dropshipping store. When they found success with dropshipping, they moved to private label their products which allowed them to deliver better product quality, faster shipping and take home more margin for themselves too.
You can copy this approach - launch multiple shopify stores at a low cost using the dropshipping model, and then once you find a winning product, re-invest the capital you’re generating to private label the product and build a lasting brand around it. Your profit will be buzzing.
11. Gaming Earbuds
As trends go, gaming earbuds are right up there with some of the best products to sell on Shopify. Right now they’re in super-high demand. What’s more is that a quick look at the competition will tell you that the bar isn’t set too high in this niche.
There’s plenty of space for you to move in with a superior product or better marketing and lap up customers like nobody's business.
Shopify store Raycon is one of the better players in this space. Take a look at their clean store design - it’s a really good example of a simple, but effective design. We also love the way they use social proof in the form of customer reviews to add legitimacy to their brand and drive more sales.
12. Ice Baths
The penultimate item on our list of the best products to sell on Shopify is a product that’s just popped off in the last year - the ice bath.
Polar is a great example of a Shopify store that’s crushing it with this trend. Ice baths like Polar’s are easy to find on Alibaba - and again they’re a high-demand product with a solid mark-up.
As you can see search volume has absolutely skyrocketed for the term ‘ice baths’ over the last few months. I’ve seen a few other companies advertising almost identical products on Instagram and TikTok which means there is competition out there.
This is both a good thing - in that it means there’s sufficient demand for multiple brands to be selling ice baths. But it’s also potentially negative in that you’ll have more competition.
So our recommendation is to think of a way to differentiate yourself from the existing players. For example, could you sponsor your local pro sports team with a couple of ice baths in exchange for some social clout? Could you market your bath towards a more specific audience like people with back pain and use physiotherapists as your affiliate marketing army?
These are just some (rough and ready) ideas for how you could differentiate from the existing players and capture an audience of loyal customers.
13. Digital Products
No list of the best products to sell on Shopify would be complete without mentioning digital products. Digital products are awesome for several reasons:
- There’s no fulfillment cost - the customer simply downloads the product
- Product creation costs are a one-off expense (not ongoing like inventory)
- Typically very high profit margin, once creation costs are recouped
- Sell to a global audience in seconds
For example Shopify store ‘How to Cake it’ sells several digital products alongside a collection of physical products - you can see their holiday baking hacks guide above.
But you don’t have to just think in terms of eBooks - other digital product formats include:
- Templates (e.g. CV templates or Business plan spreadsheets)
- Music or the rights to use your music for commercial purposes
- Membership sites where users pay for access to a community
- Downloadable artwork, prints or photography
- Online courses where you teach customers a specific skill
As you can see, selling digital products offers a great deal of opportunity - So, definitely consider them when deciding what you want to build your shopify store around..
